Dr Julian Yu is a specialist orthopaedic surgeon offering revision knee replacement for patients in which an existing joint replacement is causing problems.

Revision knee replacement is a complex surgical procedure performed to replace a previously implanted artificial knee joint that has worn out, loosened, or failed in some way.

  • Implant Wear or Loosening
Over time, components may loosen from the bone.
  • Infection
A deep infection can damage tissue and the implant.
  • Fracture
Injury around the implant may require replacement.
  • Instability
The knee may become unstable due to worn ligaments or improper alignment.
  • Stiffness or Limited Movement
Scar tissue or misalignment may cause restricted motion.

Revision surgery varies greatly depending on the issue being addressed, but generally takes a longer time than a primary replacement. Dr Yu will:

  • Remove the old implant and any damaged bone or tissue
  • Clean and prepare the bone surfaces to receive the new implant
  • Rebuild the bone, sometimes using bone grafts or metal augments
  • Insert the new prosthetic components
  • Ensure proper alignment and stability of the joint.

In some cases, specialised implants or custom-made components may be needed.

Recovery from a revision knee replacement usually takes longer than the original knee replacement. Full recovery can take several months. After surgery:

  • A hospital stay of a few days is usually required
  • Physiotherapy begins soon after surgery to regain strength and mobility
  • Walking aids such as walkers or crutches may be needed temporarily

Like all major surgeries, revision knee replacement comes with potential risks. These may include infection, blood clots, injury to nerves or blood vessels, stiffness or limited range of motion, loosening or failure of the implant, fractures that occur during the procedure, and persistent pain or dissatisfaction with the outcome.
