Medial Patellofemoral Ligament (MPFL) reconstruction is a surgical procedure used to treat patellar instability, which is a condition where the kneecap (patella) moves out of its normal position, often dislocating to the side.

The MPFL is a ligament that helps keep the patella in place by connecting it to the femur (thigh bone). When this ligament is torn or damaged, it can lead to frequent dislocations or subluxations of the knee. MPFL reconstruction aims to restore stability to the knee by replacing the damaged ligament with a graft, often taken from the patient’s own body (autograft) or from a donor (allograft).

Patient who have:

  • Recurrent patellar dislocations or subluxations, often due to a torn or stretched MPFL
  • Patellar instability after a traumatic injury, such as a sports-related accident
  • Chronic knee pain and instability that does not improve with non-surgical treatments like physiotherapy and bracing
  • Significant malalignment or structural issues of the patella or femur

Dr Yu makes small incisions around the knee and locates the site where the new ligament will be attached. A graft is harvested, either from the patient’s own tissue or from a donor. The graft is then threaded through the knee and attached to the patella and femur in the area where the MPFL would naturally be. Dr Yu may also correct any underlying alignment issues (such as a misaligned patella) to ensure long-term stability.

After surgery, patients will need to follow a rehabilitation program that focuses on regaining strength, flexibility, and stability in the knee. Patient will often need to use crutches to avoid putting weight on the knee and wear a knee brace to protect the patella and maintain alignment during the healing process.

Most patients can return to low-impact activities within 3-6 months, while high-impact sports may require up to 9-12 months for full recovery.

As with any surgery, there are some risks, including infection, blood clots, stiffness or instability. In some cases, additional surgery may be required if complications arise or if the reconstruction does not provide sufficient stability.
