Chondromalacia patella is the softening, weakening, and deterioration of the cartilage beneath the kneecap. It frequently affects young athletes and older adults with knee arthritis and is more commonly observed in women.

This condition is often found in people with knee alignment issues or muscle imbalances that affect patellar stability. Overuse from sports or repetitive activities can lead to cartilage wear, causing the kneecap to rub or grind against the bone rather than gliding smoothly over the knee joint.

It may also result from knee injuries such as fractures or dislocations or develop as part of the natural aging process.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain in the front, around, or behind the knee
  • Increased pain when climbing stairs, sitting or standing for prolonged periods, or applying pressure on the knee

Other possible symptoms:

  • A grinding or cracking sensation when moving the knee
  • In rare cases, swelling or fluid buildup in the knee joint

Initial therapy involves avoiding activities that put strain on the knee, physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles around the knee joint and wearing supportive knee braces.

If these aren't effective, Dr Yu may recommend surgery.

  • Knee Arthroscopy
A minimally invasive procedure where a small camera (arthroscope) is inserted through an incision to view and remove damaged cartilage fragments.
  • Realignment Surgery
Adjusting the kneecap’s position to relieve pressure on the cartilage.
