What is an ACL tear?
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the major ligaments in the knee, providing stability and preventing excessive forward movement of the tibia relative to the femur. ACL injuries are common among athletes and individuals involved in high-impact activities. These injuries often occur due to sudden stops, changes in direction, or direct trauma to the knee.
What are the symptoms of an ACL tear?
- A popping sound at the time of injury
- Immediate swelling in the knee
- Severe pain and inability to continue activity
- Knee instability or feeling as if the knee is giving way
- Limited range of motion

This procedure involves replacing the torn ligament with a graft, which can be sourced from:
- Autografts (patient’s own tissue, typically from the patellar tendon, hamstring, or quadriceps tendon)
- Allografts (donor tissue)
