Revision hip replacement is a surgical procedure performed to replace or repair an artificial hip joint that has become damaged or worn out over time. While total hip replacements are typically very successful, artificial joints are not designed to last forever.

Over time, the components can loosen, wear out, or become infected, leading to pain, instability, or reduced function. In such cases, a revision surgery may be necessary to restore mobility and relieve discomfort.

This procedure is more complex than an initial (primary) hip replacement because it often involves removing old implants, repairing or replacing damaged bone, and placing new components. Dr Yu may use special implants, bone grafts, or reconstruction techniques depending on the extent of damage or bone loss.

Recovery after revision surgery may take longer than after a primary hip replacement. Patients may stay in the hospital for a few days and use walking aids such as crutches or a walker during early recovery. Physiotherapy is an important part of rehabilitation, helping to regain strength, mobility, and balance.

After undergoing revision hip replacement, you must take special care to prevent the new joint from dislocating and to ensure proper healing. Some of the common precautions to be taken include:

  • Avoid combined movement of bending your hip and turning your foot inwards because it can cause dislocation
  • Keep a pillow between your legs while sleeping for 6 weeks
  • Never cross your legs or bend your hips past a right angle (90 degrees)
  • Avoid sitting on low chairs
  • Avoid bending down to pick up things, instead a grabber can be used to do so
  • Use an elevated toilet seat

Revision hip replacement carries similar risks to the original surgery such as infection, blood clots, dislocation, or nerve injury. If instructions are followed carefully during the recovery and rehabilitation period, most patients experience reduced pain, better joint function, and an overall improvement in their ability to move and perform daily activities.
