Dr Yu performs this procedure to reattach torn hamstring tendons to the pelvis. This operation is typically recommended for individuals who have sustained a complete avulsion (tear) of one or more hamstring tendons from their origin at the ischial tuberosity — the bony prominence at the bottom of the pelvis. This injury often results from sudden or forceful stretching of the leg, such as in a fall or sports-related trauma.

Surgical repair is considered in the following situations:

  • Complete tendon avulsion (where tendons are fully torn from the bone)
  • Significant retraction of the tendons (usually more than 2 cm)
  • Persistent weakness, pain, or loss of function despite conservative treatment
  • High functional demands (e.g., athletes or active individuals)

Early surgical repair (within a few weeks of injury) often leads to better outcomes compared to delayed treatment, as it reduces the risk of tendon retraction and scar tissue formation.

The surgery generally takes 1.5 to 2 hours and will require an overnight hospital stay.

  • Incision: A horizontal or vertical incision is made in the lower buttock to access the torn tendons.
  • Identification of the injury: The retracted tendons are located and mobilised.
  • Reattachment: The tendons are securely reattached to the ischial tuberosity using strong sutures and suture anchors drilled into the bone.
  • Closure: The incision is closed in layers, and a sterile dressing is applied.

As with any surgery, there are potential risks, including:

  • Infection
  • Nerve irritation, especially the sciatic nerve
  • Blood clots (DVT)
  • Incomplete healing or re-tear
  • Persistent weakness or tightness
  • Scar tissue formation
