A hip fracture is commonly caused by minor trauma in elderly individuals with weakened bones, while in younger people, it often results from high-energy trauma or severe injuries. Prolonged use of certain medications, such as bisphosphonates (used to treat osteoporosis and other bone diseases), may also increase the risk of hip fractures.

Hip fractures are classified based on their location in the upper femur:

  • Intracapsular fracture
  • Intertrochanteric fracture
  • Subtrochanteric fracture

Surgery is neccessary for most hip fractures and aims to stabilise the bone, relieve pain, and restore mobility. Dr Yu will perform different procedures depending on the location and severity of the fracture:

  • Internal Fixation
    Screws, Plates, and Rods
Used for fractures that can be realigned. Metal screws, rods, or plates are inserted to hold the bone together as it heals.

  • Hip Hemiarthroplasty
    Partial Hip Replacement
Recommended when the fracture disrupts blood supply to the femoral head. The damaged femoral head is replaced with an artificial implant.

  • Total Hip Replacement
    Total Hip Arthroplasty
Performed in severe cases or when there is pre-existing joint damage. Both the femoral head and hip socket are replaced with prosthetic components.
