Hip Pain

Hip pain is a common complaint among patients, though it may not always be localised to the hip joint itself. Discomfort can be felt in various areas around the hip, and its causes are often multifactorial. The location of the pain can indicate its underlying cause. Pain within the hip joint or groin area is typically linked to issues within the joint, while pain on the outer hip, upper thigh, or buttocks often results from problems affecting the muscles, tendons, ligaments, or soft tissues around the joint. Additionally, conditions affecting other parts of the body, such as the lower back or knees, can also lead to hip pain.

A sudden onset of hip pain is often caused by an injury, such as a hip fracture, which is more common in older adults due to age-related bone weakening. Other potential causes include arthritis, bursitis, infections, lower back issues, osteonecrosis, sprains, strains, and tendinitis from repetitive movements. Dr Yu will assess your condition through a medical history review, physical examination, and diagnostic tests like X-rays or scans.

Managing hip pain often involves self-care measures and anti-inflammatory medications for symptom relief. However, addressing the root cause is crucial. Avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain, stretching the quadriceps and hamstrings, and warming up before exercise can help improve mobility. Applying ice packs for about 15 minutes, three to four times a day, can also reduce pain and swelling. If these are not effective, you may need to consider surgery, depending on the cause.
