Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that occurs when the cartilage cushioning the hip joint gradually wears away. This leads to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility, affecting daily activities like walking, standing, and climbing stairs.

Inflammatory arthritis affecting the hip includes:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

Patients with arthritis of the hip experience:

  • Hip pain (gradual onset, worsening over time).
  • Stiffness, especially in the morning or after prolonged sitting.
  • Limited range of motion and difficulty with activities like walking or bending.
  • Clicking or grinding sensation in the hip joint.
  • Pain radiating to the groin, thigh, or knee.

For early stages of hip arthritis, Dr Yu will recommend avoiding high-impact activities that cause further stress to the joint. He will also recommend physiotherapy to strengthen the hip muscles and can prescribe pain relieving medication.

If the arthritis is advanced or there is severe pain, then there are several surgical options available.

  • Hip Arthroscopy
Removes loose cartilage or bone spurs in early-stage OA.

  • Osteotomy
Reshapes bones to reduce stress on the joint (for younger patients).

  • Total Hip Replacement
Damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial joint (prosthesis). Recommended for severe cases with persistent pain and mobility loss.
