Dr Julian Yu is a specialist orthopaedic surgeon offering total hip replacement surgery for advanced cases of hip arthritis.
Total Hip Replacement (THR) or hip arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or diseased hip joint is replaced with an artificial implant. This procedure is commonly performed to relieve pain and improve mobility in patients suffering from severe arthritis, hip fractures, or other degenerative joint conditions.
Dr Yu may recommend a hip replacement when you have:
Severe hip pain that limits daily activities such as walking, standing, or climbing stairs
Chronic stiffness in the hip joint, restricting movement
Hip joint damage due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, or hip fractures
Minimal benefit from medications, physiotherapy or cortisone injections
Total Hip Replacement (THR)
Both the femoral head (ball) and acetabulum (socket) are replaced with prosthetic components.
Partial Hip Replacement (Hemiarthroplasty)
Only the femoral head is replaced, typically after a fracture.
Hip Resurfacing
The damaged surface of the femoral head is reshaped and covered with a metal cap instead of full replacement.
A total hip replacement can greatly improve your life by reducing pain and making movement easier. If you have hip arthritis or a serious injury, this surgery can take away the constant pain that makes walking, standing, or even resting uncomfortable. It helps restore movement, so you can do daily activities like climbing stairs, getting in and out of a chair, or going for a walk without trouble.
Many people find they can be more active again, enjoying hobbies like swimming or biking. The new hip joint is designed to last for many years, giving long-term relief and reducing the need for pain medicine. Overall, a hip replacement helps you move better, feel better, and enjoy life with less pain and more freedom.
Robotic-assisted hip surgery allows Dr Yu to perform a total hip replacement with greater precision. This can lead to a faster recovery, less pain, and a lower risk of complications.

Total hip replacement surgery is generally safe, but there are some risks to be aware of.
Infection can happen at the surgery site, causing swelling and pain. Blood clots may form in the legs and can be dangerous if they travel to the lungs. Sometimes, the new hip joint can move out of place (dislocate), especially in the first few months.
Over time, the artificial joint can wear down or become loose, which may require another surgery. In rare cases, nearby nerves or blood vessels can be damaged, leading to numbness or weakness. There is a small chance that the operated leg may end up slightly longer or shorter than the other.
Despite these risks, most people recover well, with less pain and better movement after the surgery.
